The Issue

Living off of CR 65, I've witnessed first-hand the frustration of navigating the intersection of County Road 12 and 65 without dedicated left-hand and right-hand turn lanes, as well as green arrows for traffic on CR 12. While turn lanes and arrows were added north and south bound on 65 at this intersection, the construction failed to solve the real issue. Traffic on CR 12 at 65 during all hours of the day is chaotic, leading to extremely long wait-times that often back up all the way to S. Hickory. The result turns into impatient drivers attempting risky maneuvers cutting through businesses in attempt to get around the back-up. This is not just an inconvenience—it's a safety hazard for everyone!

At intersections like County Road 12 & 65, where traffic converges from various directions, the lack of designated turn lanes and signals at this intersection on CR 12 exacerbates congestion because cars cannot turn left due to oncoming traffic. This has created a very high traffic risk for accidents. In a place like Baldwin County, where the population is growing at a rapid pace, ensuring the safety and efficiency of our roads is paramount.

Adding left-hand turn lanes and turn arrows on CR 12 at the intersection at 65, is not only a practical solution but a necessary one. According to the Federal Highway Administration, dedicated turn lanes and signals can reduce crashes and improve traffic flow by as much as 30%. It’s imperative that Baldwin County Road Commission addresses this issue promptly.

The recent developments and increased population in Baldwin County, specifically south Foley means more vehicles on the road, further necessitating these changes. Proper traffic management is essential not only to ease current congestion but also to accommodate future growth sustainably.

By signing this petition, you're taking a stand for safer roads in our community. Join us in urging the Baldwin County Road Commission to make these essential changes, ensuring smoother commutes and safer intersections for all residents. Sign today to help bring this much-needed improvement to fruition.

Thank you for sharing the petition regarding the intersection at County Road 12 and County Road 65. I appreciate citizens taking the time to voice their concerns and stay engaged in transportation improvements in our area. I want to confirm that the county has already moved forward with construction on this intersection. As posted on our official Facebook page last Friday, beginning December 1, construction will start Phase II of the CR 65 & CR 12 intersection improvements adding left turn lanes on CR 12 and the permanent mast-arm traffic signal. This follows earlier CR 65 work and completes the full project for this final phase of improvements. Construction updates will be shared as work moves forward. We will continue to monitor how the intersection functions once the project is complete—as we do with all our roadway projects. Citizen input is always welcome, and I appreciate the community’s attention to safety and infrastructure. Please know that citizens can always contact my office at 251-972-8555 for questions concerning this or any other matters of concern. Commissioner Underwood
