Require Background Checks to be Completed Before Gun Sales

You probably already know that when someone buys a gun from a federally licensed gun dealer, a background check is run on the buyer by submitting the name to the federal database.

What you may not know is that if the check isn’t completed within 72 hours, then the gun can be sold without the background check.

This means that people convicted of violent domestic crimes or those determined by courts to be dangerously mentally ill will be sold a gun. It's called a "default sale" and it's an incredibly dangerous loophole that needs to be closed -- especially as our country copes with yet another mass shooting, this time at a community college in Oregon where ten people were murdered.

Thankfully, a bill has just been introduced that would close the loophole by simply requiring that a background check is complete before the gun is sold.

This isn't a partisan issue. 92% of American agree with background checks for gun purchases, including 86% of Republicans. Having someone wait just a few days to make sure that they aren't a threat before giving them a gun is common sense -- and it's exactly what the background check system is in place for.

To me, every life lost to this senseless violence diminishes us as a society. We shake our heads and wonder why this happens, but we gradually accept it as a way of life. We have to demand a change.

Please sign my petition asking Congress to require background checks to be fully completed before a gun can be sold to that individual.
