The Issue

As a community deeply invested in the education and well-being of our children, particularly those with special needs, we urgently call upon the West Plains R-VII School District Board of Education to implement safety measures in our special education classrooms. This need stems from the personal experiences and concerns shared by many parents and guardians in our district.

Our nonverbal children, who are unable to communicate their experiences verbally, rely on us to ensure their safety and well-being. Currently, without audio and video surveillance in these classrooms, these children are at a heightened risk of abuse, neglect, or misunderstanding that goes unnoticed and unreported.

There have been numerous accounts nationwide of nonverbal and special needs students being mistreated in educational settings where surveillance could have provided accountability and evidence necessary to act swiftly and appropriately. According to research, over 1 in 5 parents of children with disabilities report incidents of school-related physical aggression. This statistic is alarming and highlights the urgent need for additional protective measures in our schools.

By installing secure audio and video safety cameras, we will not only be protecting our most vulnerable students but also providing peace of mind to parents and creating a more transparent environment. This system can serve as a vital tool to monitor the physical safety and ensure a quality educational environment that adheres to best practices.

We understand concerns about privacy, and we propose that these measures be implemented with strict guidelines to safeguard personal data and ensure footage is used only for the protection and safety of students and educators.

We urge members of the West Plains R-VII School District Board of Education to prioritize this issue and act promptly. By doing so, you will be giving a voice to our nonverbal children and empowering educators with an additional resource to ensure the best possible educational outcomes.

Please join us in this crucial cause by signing this petition. Together, we can create a safer and more inclusive environment for all students within the West Plains R-VII School District. Your signature matters and will make a difference for our community's future.
