Require attached bottle caps in Florida
The Issue
Florida's beaches and waterways are home to some of the country's most diverse marine ecosystems, yet plastic pollution continues to threaten the wildlife and coastlines that make our state unique. One of the most common and easily overlooked forms of plastic pollution is detached bottle caps.
Bottle caps account for an estimated 7.7% to 15.5% of individual plastic pollutants found across the United States. Because they are small, lightweight, and easily separated from bottles, they frequently end up in waterways and on beaches, where they pose risks to marine animals and contribute to long-lasting plastic pollution. During beach cleanups organized by Creek for Clean Oceans --a student led club at Spruce Creek High School-- detached bottle caps are consistently among the most common items collected.
Fortunately, there is a simple solution that is already being used successfully in other parts of the world. Across the European Union, beverage companies such as Coca-Cola, Sprite, and Aquafina sell bottles with tethered caps that remain attached after opening. This small packaging change helps prevent caps from becoming litter while maintaining the same consumer experience.
Creek for Clean Oceans is calling on Florida lawmakers to require attached bottle caps on beverage containers sold throughout the state. This practical, proven solution would reduce plastic pollution, better protect marine wildlife, and demonstrate Florida's commitment to preserving our coastlines for future generations.
By signing this petition, you are supporting a simple policy change that can make a lasting difference for Florida's beaches, waterways, and wildlife.
