The Issue

I am facing another eviction trial, and what keeps hitting me is how fast one missed payment can turn into a full-blown crisis. In my own case, I saw the problem coming months ahead of time. I was dealing with a contentious divorce, my work slows down in the summer, and then my car started breaking down on top of everything else. I did what people always say renters should do: I spoke up early, I came respectfully, and I came with a solution.

I asked my leasing office to work with money already owed to me so I could stay current and keep paying. I was told no, because if they did it for me, they would have to do it for everyone. My answer was simple: as they should. That is exactly the point. If a renter is trying to prevent a crisis before it becomes an eviction, landlords should have to offer a real payment-plan option instead of pushing people straight toward fees, court, and homelessness.

Right now, the system is set up so that the second you miss rent, the punishment starts piling on. In my case, the late fee was $500, and you cannot even separate that from the rent and pay it down in parts. It becomes all or nothing. That kind of policy does not solve housing instability in Atlanta. It creates it. Empty units sitting for months while working people get pushed out is not common sense, and it is not humane.

I am calling on Atlanta leaders to require landlords to offer a reasonable payment plan before they file for eviction over nonpayment. Give renters a real chance to catch up before a temporary hardship becomes a permanent mark on their record. If you believe working people deserve a system that helps them stay housed instead of trapping them in debt, please sign this petition.
