The Issue

Andrews University is known for its prestigious music programs, and for many of us, the cornerstone of that experience has been the University Choirs and Conducting program, led by Professor Stephen Zork. As a devoted student in this program, I have witnessed firsthand the impact of Professor Zork’s leadership. His dedication has been integral to our growth as musicians, and his guidance has been pivotal for the conducting master’s students, University Singers, University Chorale, and even the music classes. His influence extends beyond the classroom to our memorable concerts at the Pioneer Memorial Church (PMC), Howard Performing Arts Center (HPAC), and noteworthy performances off-campus.

It is with profound concern that we recently learned of the university’s decision not to replace Professor Zork following his retirement at the end of this semester. This decision undermines the structure and reputation of the music department. Without a direct succession in leadership for this myriad of essential programs, music students like myself are left with uncertain academic paths. We are exploring the upsetting prospect of transferring to other institutions simply to achieve our academic goals. The impact of such decision goes beyond the doors of Hamel hall. Music is a way to connect graduate and undergraduate students of all majors which created strong bonds on campus. For many high school graduates music is something they will be looking forward to continue doing when arriving to a college even if not majoring in it.

The absence of a dedicated leader for our choral department would result in the significant loss of opportunities for both current and prospective students. The choral program is not merely an academic exercise; it is a tradition and a vital part of the program, touching the lives of all involved in it and beyond.

We urge the administration of Andrews University to immediately commence the process of appointing a new director for the University Choirs and Conducting program. Not only is this essential to uphold the standards of excellence that define our music program, but it is also crucial in maintaining the morale, integrity, and future aspirations of the students.

By signing this petition, you are supporting the continuation of a fundamental element of Andrews University’s music department and ensuring that the legacy built under Professor Zork's tenure is preserved and extended for future students. Together, we can make sure that this essential aspect of the university continues to inspire and educate generations to come. Please join us in safeguarding our musical education by signing and sharing this petition.
