The Issue

In Richardson, Texas, delivery drones from Amazon's Prime Air program pass low over backyards and homes throughout the day, some descending to roughly 13 feet off the ground and creating a buzzing hum that residents compare to a swarm of bees. City officials approved the program's zoning last December, and the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) cleared the drones for flight after concluding they caused no "significant impact." For families living under the flight paths, though, the daily reality looks different.

"We can't live like this," said Richardson resident Nikki Anderson, according to The New York Times, describing how the noise reaches her even indoors with the television on.

Scott Bratcher, president of a local homeowners' association, warned the disruption will not stay contained to one suburb: "What's happening in Richardson is about to happen all over the country," he told The New York Times, adding that "the government and the F.A.A. have failed us." Amazon has said it plans to expand Prime Air to 500 towns and cities by the end of the year.

Neither the city nor the FAA has set meaningful limits on flight hours, noise levels, or how low drones can fly over private property. Residents who complain are sometimes told their delivery route has simply been shifted to a different part of their own yard.

This petition calls on the Richardson City Council and the FAA to set enforceable noise, altitude, and operating-hour limits on drone deliveries before this program expands to hundreds more communities. Sign the petition now to demand real limits before delivery drones take over more American backyards.
