Require allergen labelling for artificial sweeteners
The Issue
Living with Mast Cell Activation Syndrome means navigating a world full of potential triggers for allergic reactions. This condition causes my body to respond unpredictably to various stimuli—be they airborne, ingested, or through direct contact. A particularly challenging aspect is avoiding artificial sweeteners, which can provoke severe symptoms like hives, headaches, stomach pain, nausea, and vomiting.
In the past, I and many like me have been able to rely on clear food and drink labels to make safe choices for consumption. However, as product formulas have changed, the once-safe items now sometimes contain hidden dangers like artificial sweeteners. Recognizing food allergens has been made easier by clear, bold labelling, but this consideration has not been extended to artificial sweeteners, leaving us vulnerable and in constant anxiety.
The omission of artificial sweeteners from bold labelling standards leaves countless individuals in a precarious position, especially those of us dining in cafes, restaurants, and pubs where ingredient lists are often not readily available. According to the International Agency for Research on Cancer, some artificial sweeteners have been under scrutiny for their potential health impacts, emphasizing the importance of transparency in ingredient disclosure.
Implementing a mandatory policy to declare the presence of artificial sweeteners in bold print, similar to known allergens, would drastically improve our ability to make informed choices and minimize health risks. It would allow people with sensitivities such as Mast Cell Activation Syndrome to confidently consume food and beverages without fearing an unexpected reaction, thereby improving quality of life and reducing emergency healthcare visits.
Moreover, ensuring transparency in ingredient disclosure affects a significant portion of the population. A report by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration suggests that food intolerances and sensitivities affect about 1 in 10 people in the population, many of whom may be unaware of the source of their symptoms.
It is imperative that legislation is updated to reflect the needs of modern consumers, ensuring that all ingredients, particularly those with contentious health implications, are clearly indicated. We call upon lawmakers to mandate bold labelling of artificial sweeteners on all food and drink products, including offerings in cafes, restaurants, and pubs.
Please sign this petition to advocate for this crucial policy change that could prevent countless allergic reactions and support a healthier and safer food culture for all.
