The Issue

The Colorado River is running low, and the federal government’s new 10-year plan asks only three states to carry the burden. Under the plan from the U.S. Bureau of Reclamation, Arizona, California and Nevada face required cuts. Colorado, New Mexico, Utah and Wyoming are only asked to give up water voluntarily.

Arizona would lose the most: 760,000 acre-feet a year, roughly a quarter of its share. One acre-foot can supply about three Arizona homes for a year, according to the Arizona Department of Water Resources. California would cut 440,000 acre-feet a year, and Nevada 50,000.

Climate change is shrinking the snow and runoff that feed the river, and decades-old agreements promised users more water than the river can deliver. That is a problem every state in the basin shares. A drought does not stop at a state line, and the solution should not either.

The Lower Basin states say they have already made big sacrifices. Arizona has left more than 5.5 million acre-feet of its water in Lake Mead since 2014, according to state water officials. Now Arizona has moved to join Nevada’s lawsuit, which argues the plan unfairly targets the Lower Basin.

Cities, farms, tribes and businesses across all seven states rely on this river. A fair plan would spread the cuts across every state, based on what each one uses and what the river can actually provide.

The U.S. Department of the Interior and the Bureau of Reclamation have the power to revise this plan. They should go back to the table and require meaningful reductions from all seven states, not just three.

Sign the petition to demand a Colorado River plan that shares the cuts fairly, before canals run dry and families pay the price.
