My daughter, who is diagnosed with autism level 2, sensory processing disorder, and ADHD, is not receiving the critical support she needs to thrive in our local school system. This is not just a personal challenge but a broader issue affecting many families in Russell County, Alabama. Our children deserve better; they deserve the opportunity to reach their full potential in the educational environment.

Many children, like my daughter, are not receiving the necessary Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) therapy, occupational therapy, and speech therapy in schools across Russell County. According to the CDC, 1 in 36 children has been identified with autism spectrum disorder (ASD), and many of these children, along with others who have different special needs, benefit significantly from these therapies. These services are not just beneficial but essential for their educational progress and personal development.

Unfortunately, the lack of these services in our schools means that many children are falling behind or not achieving the milestones necessary for their growth and well-being. While these therapies are available outside the school system, many families, including my own, struggle to afford them, making the school system's provision of them a crucial resource.

Our solution is clear and actionable: require all schools in Russell County to employ qualified therapists to deliver ABA therapy, occupational therapy, and speech therapy to children diagnosed with autism and other special needs. This step will ensure that all children receive equitable educational opportunities and support in their learning journeys.
