Require all public highschools to have official skip days

Require all public highschools to have official skip days

The Issue

Growing up, I always felt envious of the seniors in our high school. They had the privilege of enjoying a "Senior Skip Day," a special day marked only for them to enjoy a day off without any repercussions. What about the rest of us? Shouldn't every student, regardless of their year, have the opportunity to experience a carefree day off from the rigors of school life? It seemed unfair to me and I imagine it feels the same for many others.

A single day of excused absence, dedicated to relaxed, personal time is a great mental health boost. Statistics show that one in five students suffers from severe stress due to the pressures of academic demands (Source: American Psychological Association). A designated skip day could relieve this stress and offer a renewed energy towards academics. Studies even indicate that periods of leisure and relaxation improve productivity and creativity (Source: Harvard Business Review).

Instituting an official skip day for all grades, once annually, can evenly allocate this benefit and help foster equality among students. In today's fast-paced educational environment, implementing a skip day for each grade could positively affect the well-being and mental health of thousands of students.

Several districts across the country have started recognizing the value of mental health days. Let's take a stride forward and make this a universal standard for all public schools. By signing this petition, you advocate for every student's right to a breather, to rejuvenate, and to have one day where they can just be kids again.

Join us in urging the Department of Education to make skip days a reality for all. Please sign and share this petition to support a day of freedom and rejuvenation for all students.
