The Issue

I recently had a disheartening experience when I went to pay my real estate taxes using my scooter. Upon arrival, I found myself unable to open the door to the office as I was alone. I waited for several minutes, hoping someone would come by to assist, but no one did. With the taxes due, I had no choice but to leave my scooter outside, take my key, and struggle to open the door on my own. On another occasion, I visited the courthouse and managed to get inside the building, but I could not access the office or bathroom without assistance. This was not only challenging but also deeply embarrassing.

Access to public buildings is a fundamental right for everyone, regardless of physical ability. The Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) was instituted to ensure environments are accessible and usable by everyone, yet many public buildings still lack basic accessibility features. Simple modifications can profoundly impact lives and honor the dignity of individuals using wheelchairs and scooters.

It is imperative that all public buildings and offices, including doors and bathrooms, be fully accessible to people with mobility challenges. Each year, countless individuals face unnecessary obstacles in accessing public services, leading to undignified and frustrating experiences.

According to the CDC, over 13% of adults in the U.S. have a mobility disability. This significant portion of our population deserves to enter and utilize public spaces freely and independently. Reducing these barriers not only complies with ADA standards but shows respect and inclusion for all individuals.

We propose immediate action to mandate accessibility in all public buildings and offices across the United States. This includes automatic door openers, ramps, accessible bathroom facilities, and clear signage to guide people with disabilities.

Help us make public spaces truly public, where everyone can navigate freely and engage with essential services without unnecessary challenges. Sign this petition to urge lawmakers to enforce existing ADA regulations and to fund necessary modifications, ensuring full accessibility in all public facilities across our nation. Together, we can create a more inclusive America for everyone.
