Everyone has heard about the flooding in Louisiana. It's been labeled the worst disaster since Hurricane Sandy. No demonstrations, no blaming of the President, no two hour "special reports". However, something big has come of this and I think you will hear more about this "Cajun Navy". When it became clear that help wasn't coming to Louisiana in the form of our government (kind of like the Nashville floods) Louisianians took charge as they normally would in an emergency. The headlines in Louisiana and here in Texas showed hundreds of fishing boats being launched into the flood waters. Louisiana fishermen were there with the life saving equipment when no others appeared until later. Thousands were pulled to safety. Everywhere were fishing boats saving people from peril. Thus was born "The Cajun Navy". Below are remarks from a man that described it best. A little perspective goes a long way. Help the folks in Louisiana any way you can. Donate to the Red Cross or any of the many unsung organizations going all out to help; Rob Gaudet‎ to The Cajun Navy 5 hrs · Baton Rouge, LA · It's 2:24 am and for the first time in 5 nights the Cajun Navy channel is quiet. No more rescues or 1:30 am water runs to those who stayed behind. No more checking the levee one more time off a Facebook request. No more pulling cats off roofs and no more endless chatter and urgent scrambling. And sadly, no more midnight knock knock jokes from an exhausted Cajun Navy Captain on his last rescue run. Everyone is safe. And like Alaina Hebert who has been up 48 hours straight, the team sleeps. I feel Iike I should be satisfied, happy at a job well done in the face of epic tradgedy and suffering. But something is missing. Somehow there's a hole. I think this is why. This 'thing' called the Great Flood, as horrible as it is, birthed the Cajun Navy. Instead of a media world where we often feel like simple pawns in a game of global chess and have no control. We were empowered. The Great Flood forced us (members and non members alike) to do what we should have been doing all along. Focusing on what's really important in all of our lives. Helping our communities, saving our neighbors and finding ourselves again. In the midst of it we figured out how to celebrate the good in humanity and by doing so we regained control of our lives. And we became better people.
