My colleagues and I recently received a corporate memo from Landry’s, which stated that water bottles, Stanleys, and personal cups are no longer permitted in our restaurant and operational work areas. This sudden change has left many of us concerned about our ability to stay hydrated while managing our demanding workloads.

As someone who works long shifts, often with minimal breaks, staying hydrated isn't just a matter of comfort—it's a necessity. Depriving restaurant staff of easily accessible water during peak service hours is both impractical and unhealthy. Dehydration can lead to fatigue, reduced focus, and even severe health issues. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) stress the importance of regular water intake for health and cognitive function.

What Landry's currently mandates stands at odds with these recommendations. In high-paced environments like restaurants, where employees are constantly on their feet, hydration is critical to performance and overall well-being. Denying access to personal water bottles puts undue stress on your hard-working employees, which in turn can affect service quality and customer satisfaction.

We understand the need for maintaining cleanliness and preventing temporary clutter in our work areas. Thus, we propose solutions that balance both hygiene and hydration. Landry’s could implement dedicated hydration stations—similar to those in many corporate settings—where employees can quickly and efficiently access water without disrupting the restaurant environment. Alternatively, providing staff with company-branded reusable bottles can ensure uniformity and organization while prioritizing staff health.
