Recently, during a weekend getaway at an AirBnB in Rockingham County, NH, my hockey team's goalie suffered an unfortunate injury. Like many adults renting these houses, she was enjoying adult beverages when she was tempted to try out the aerialist silks hanging in the rental. Tragically, while attempting tricks to show off in front of some young friends, she fell and broke the fingers on her glove hand. This injury has not only sidelined our beloved goalie but has also impacted our team, The Pigeons, as well as others in the area.

This is a call to action to require AirBnB hosts throughout Rockingham County to remove aerialist silks and trampolines from their rental properties. These items, while seemingly fun, pose significant risks especially to guests who might not recognize the potential dangers, particularly after consuming alcohol. Adults staying in these rentals do so to unwind, and sometimes that involves drinking. Adding potentially harmful equipment into the mix has resulted in accidents that local teams like ours cannot afford. Tommy can’t always be there to sub for us in net. 

AirBnB hosts must prioritize the safety and well-being of their guests. By eliminating aerialist silks and trampolines from rental properties, hosts will significantly reduce the risk of injuries and ensure a worry-free stay for their renters. According to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, there are over 100,000 trampoline-related injuries annually. Even more concerning, those unfamiliar with the use of aerialist silks can face serious harm, as my friend experienced. Even when you are a skilled trampoline aerialist, mixing silks, trampolines, and alcohol can have unexpected negative results.

We urge the Rockingham County regulatory bodies to implement guidelines mandating safety audits for AirBnB properties to keep hazardous recreational equipment out of rental homes. This action will protect renters and prevent needless accidents that can disrupt not only personal lives but community recreational activities as well.
