The Issue
Having dedicated over 20 years of my life to supporting students with disabilities, I have witnessed first-hand the numerous challenges they face in educational settings. One significant hurdle is the inaccessibility of certain spaces. At Gavilan College, many current facilities are not equipped with ADA-compliant automatic doors, posing a substantial barrier for students with physical disabilities.
The Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) mandates that buildings, especially educational institutions, should not only be accessible but also welcoming for all. Unfortunately, Gavilan College lacks automatic doors at key entry points to departments, restrooms, and even building entrances. Students, faculty, and visitors with disabilities often experience unnecessary difficulty and stress, limiting their ability to fully participate in academic life.
Automatic door openers are not merely a convenience but a necessity for ensuring equal access and promoting inclusivity. The absence of these features can hinder the educational experience and compromise the dignity of those who cannot navigate doors independently. Addressing this issue is not only a legal obligation but a moral one.
It is fundamental for Gavilan College to commit to accessibility by immediately installing ADA-compliant automatic doors to the New Library/ Student Resource Center.
