REQUESTING Time for Additional Neighborhood Voices to be Heard
The Issue
By signing this petition, I am requesting that the City Commissioners conduct four dedicated public engagement sessions before they vote on the zoning changes so that residents can understand the impact of the new zoning recommendations on a neighborhood-by-neighborhood basis. Each neighborhood can then provide feedback to the city. These sessions must occur before/after the workday and on weekends, if necessary, to ensure residence participation and easy access to information.
GRAND RAPIDS PROPOSED ZONING LAW TRANSPARENCY PETITION
REQUESTING TIME FOR ADDITIONAL NEIGHBORHOOD VOICE INPUT
On January 25, 2024, the City Planning Commission approved several amendments to the Grand Rapids zoning ordinance. Many residents requested that the Planning Commission delay its vote to seek additional input from the neighborhoods and explain how these zoning changes would affect each neighborhood. These amendments are now before the City Commission, which will vote on them soon.

WHO IS AFFECTED?
The following neighborhoods that are Traditional Neighborhoods – Low-Density Residential (TN-LDR) are subject to all five proposed changes:
Auburn Hills Fulton Heights Midtown
Baxter Garfield Park Oakdale
Belknap Lookout Heritage Hill Roosevelt Park
Boston Square Highland Park Seeds of Promise
East Hills John Ball Area Neighbors Southeast Community Eastown Martin Luther King, Jr. Park South Hill West Grand. Westside Connection*
HOW WILL THIS IMPACT OUR NEIGHBORHOODS AS PROPOSED?
The following proposed ordinances will only affect the above-stated neighborhoods. The term “by right” indicates that a property owner would be able to do it without approval from the city or input from neighbors through a planning commission hearing.
Small Scale Infill:
-Allow by-right conversion of existing single-family houses to two-units
-Allow by-right conversion of existing two-unit buildings to higher density
-Reduced lot size for new developments
Parking:
-Eliminate parking requirements for developments of six or fewer dwelling units on Link Residential or Network Residential streets
-Reduce parking requirements for projects developed within 1/2 mile of transit
WHO IS AFFECTED?
ALL NEIGHBORHOODS IN THE CITY OF GRAND RAPIDS ARE AFFECTED BY THESE PROPOSED ORDINANCES
Accessory Dwelling Units (ADUs)
-By right
