The Issue
Our family in Nashua, NH has two beloved pet pigs who have become an integral part of our household. These pigs, who have been with us since they were babies, have only ever known a life of love and companionship. They share our home with my husband, our three young daughters, and our other pets, including dogs and cats. Far from livestock, they sleep in our children’s beds, snuggle on the couch, and have developed a tranquil, harmonious relationship with everyone in our family.
In Nashua, however, city ordinances do not currently support having pigs as household pets, grouping them instead under regulations meant for livestock. This outdated classification fails to recognize the reality that pigs can be just as gentle, clean, and friendly as the more traditional pets. For us, these pigs are not just animals; they are cherished family members who provide emotional support and joy to every one of us.
There is a need for the city of Nashua to reconsider and update its animal ordinances to reflect modern understanding and the increasing trend of pigs being kept as household pets. Cities across the United States are beginning to understand that these intelligent creatures deserve the same consideration as other domesticated animals, recognizing the benefits of their companionship to families who choose to adopt them.
While concerns about noise, cleanliness, and safety are understandable, we promise and actively uphold accountability in maintaining hygiene, peacefulness, and the safety of our pigs and community. Our pet pigs are well-behaved, non-violent, and kept inside our home.
Please join us in petitioning Nashua city officials to revise their regulations and allow families like ours to officially keep pigs as pets. By signing this petition, you are supporting not only our family’s right to keep our companions but also the need for an updated, compassionate approach to pet ownership that recognizes diverse family dynamics in our city. Let’s come together to ensure that all pets, regardless of species, can remain with the families who love them so dearly.
