Request World Meteorological Organization to Rename Atlantic Storms after Major Polluters
The Issue
Climate change is not just personal to me, but to everyone, regardless of who we are or where we live. From increasingly dangerous weather conditions, sweeping wildlands fires, the spread of diseases, to an unsustainable rise in insurance premiums, none of us are spared the dire impacts. Devastatingly, the greatest contributors to this environmental degradation remain unnamed in mainstream discussions.
It's time the oil, natural gas, and coal industries - the primary contributors to global warming - receive due recognition for their efforts in influencing our climate. We propose that the World Meteorological Organization change their current system of naming Atlantic Tropical Storms. Instead of a rotating list of names, let's name them after these major polluting industries, for instance, Hurricane Exxon or Tropical Storm Halliburton.
According to a study published in Environmental Research Letters, the gas and coal industries are responsible for over half of global industrial greenhouse gas emissions from 1988 to 2015 (source: CDP report, 2017). Raised awareness of these facts will underscore the urgency of our struggle to mitigate climate change.
Change cannot happen without proper recognition and accountability. So, let’s ensure that when we talk about hurricanes caused by global warming, we mention exactly who is contributing the most to these disastrous conditions. Sign this petition and make your voice count in this significant move towards the right direction.
