Request US Government to Initiate Nationwide Referendum on Unification

The Issue

I, like many others, acknowledge the strong bonds of history, culture and language that tie the United States and Canada together. As allied nations, we share a lengthy history of cooperation, mutual respect, and a shared language. Being significant trading partners, the possibility of unification could present an opportunity for further economic growth.

A basis for this argument comes from the high amount of trade between our countries. As per the Office of the United States Trade Representative, Canada is currently the United States' 2nd largest goods trading partner with $612.4 billion in total (two-way) goods trade during 2019. Goods exports totaled $292.7 billion; goods imports totaled $319.4 billion (source: USTR). A unification could further strengthen this economic bond.

This isn't just about economics, though. We share a 5,525 mile border, the longest international border in the world, which has been a symbol of peace and cooperation. Furthermore, we share a common official language, English, which would make a transition like this less complicated than many might believe.

Given such potential benefits, I propose that the US government should hold an official nationwide referendum during the 2026 midterms, asking citizens their perspective on potential unification with Canada.

The commonality between our histories, cultures, and languages makes like-mindedness natural, increasing the feasibility of such a proposition. It would be a monumental decision, one that every citizen should have a say in. That's why it's crucial that the US government allows its citizens an opportunity to express their opinion through a referendum.

Support this call for democracy and unity. Please sign this petition to ask the US government to include a proposal for potential unification with Canada on the 2026 midterm ballot.
