Request Traffic Signals at High Risk Intersections along FM179

The Issue

Amid growing concerns regarding traffic safety, we urge the City of Lubbock and TxDOT to install traffic lights at high-risk intersections: FM-179 (Inler Ave) & 34th St., FM-179 (Inler Ave) & 4th St., FM-179 (Dowden Rd) & 50th St., and FM-179 (Dowden Rd) & 66th St. These specific intersections have been witnessing an escalating rate of traffic, resulting in accidents causing serious injuries and even fatalities. The installation of traffic signals will bring a considerable decrease in such hazardous incidents. We must prioritize the safety of all road users in Lubbock and Wolfforth, including many newer drivers driving to and from Frenship High down this road.

The main culprits are the intersections at 50th and the one at 66th, which only have stop signs for the east/west-bound traffic, but the north/south-bound traffic traveling 179 does not have a stop sign and the speed limit is 60mph, with people frequently exceeding that limit. The intersections at 4th and the one at 34th fair better, as they have 4-way stops, but people often fail to yield the right-a-way or run the stop signs altogether. Traffic signals would help significantly decrease these instances for all four areas.

Per an article by KCBD, TxDOT had originally planned to install lights at the major intersections, but did not list which ones they considered "major" (article linked). TxDOT Project Will Rebuild FM179. We need signals at all HIGH RISK intersections to decrease the amount of right-angle collisions, something that many Department of Transportation sites list can reduce these types of crashes by 34%.
