Request Tony Wakeham's resignation for signing the MOU without a referendum
The Issue
Growing up in Newfoundland and Labrador, the majestic beauty of Churchill Falls always held a special place in our hearts. It's a symbol of our rich heritage and has been a source of prosperity for so many within our province. For decades, we've seen how important resources like Churchill Falls play a pivotal role in shaping our economy and ensuring a bright future for our children and grandchildren.
That's why the recent decision by Premier Tony Wakeham and his team to sign a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) regarding the governance and control of Churchill Falls without a promised public referendum feels like a betrayal to every Newfoundlander and Labradorian. We were promised that any significant decisions about valuable assets like Churchill Falls would involve a direct vote, allowing every voice in our communities to be heard. Instead, decisions are being made behind closed doors, ignoring public sentiment and undermining our democratic rights.
A referendum is not just a formality; it is an essential part of our democratic process that ensures accountability and transparency. The people of Newfoundland and Labrador deserve to have their say in decisions that significantly impact their futures. The resource wealth of Churchill Falls should benefit our people, not be handed over without our consent.
The understanding previously cemented concerning Churchill Falls has been a contentious issue, especially regarding its benefits often tipping in favour of Quebec. Our expectations were clear – a fair and equitable agreement that acknowledges Newfoundland’s integral role. By bypassing a referendum, Premier Wakeham has not only disregarded his promise but has also put at risk the fair negotiation powers of Newfoundland in this significant inter-provincial dialogue.
We call upon Tony Wakeham and his administration to acknowledge this oversight and resign from their positions immediately. This resignation is a necessary first step in restoring trust within our leadership and giving voice back to the people of Newfoundland and Labrador. With new leadership, we can ensure future decisions will respect our democratic values and prioritise the voices and best interests of Newfoundlanders.
Let’s stand together to demand accountability and insist that our rights as voters are honoured. Sign this petition to urge Tony Wakeham to step down, setting a precedent for accountability and transparency moving forward.
