The Issue

Lunar New Year is one of the most significant cultural celebrations observed by billions of people around the world. It marks the beginning of a new year based on the lunar calendar and holds deep cultural, historical, and family significance, especially for members of the Asian community. Despite its importance, many students and families in the Bernards Township School District face the difficult choice of missing class or not being able to celebrate this meaningful holiday with their loved ones.

Designating Lunar New Year as an official school holiday in our district would not only acknowledge and respect the cultural heritage of a significant portion of our student body, but also promote cultural diversity and awareness within our educational institutions. Recognizing this holiday would further support the district’s commitment to inclusivity and equity by allowing students to observe their cultural traditions without compromising their educational responsibilities.

Moreover, implementing this change could serve as an educational opportunity for all students to learn about and appreciate diverse cultural practices, fostering a more inclusive school environment. According to data from the U.S. Department of Education, schools that actively incorporate multicultural education often experience higher student engagement, improved attendance, and a stronger sense of community, benefiting everyone in the district.

Adopting this proposal would also align with similar initiatives across the country, where school districts have successfully acknowledged and embraced cultural diversity by adjusting holiday calendars to accommodate major cultural celebrations. In neighboring townships—such as Bridgewater-Raritan, Hillsborough, Warren, Green Brook, and Watchung Borough—school districts have officially recognized Lunar New Year as a holiday, demonstrating a clear commitment to celebrating cultural diversity.

We urge the Bernards Township School District to consider the significance of this day for many students and their families. By making Lunar New Year an official school holiday, the district would take an important step toward honoring all cultures represented within its schools.

Please join us in advocating for this meaningful change by signing this petition. Together, we can foster an educational environment that truly reflects and respects the diverse cultural narratives of our student community.
