Request the EECS department to admit COMPSCI C182 waitlisted students
Request the EECS department to admit COMPSCI C182 waitlisted students
The Issue
As a UC Berkeley EECS undergraduate currently waitlisted for CS 182, I am asking the EECS department to expand enrollment so that waitlisted students can take the course this semester. For students pursuing machine learning, CS 182 is an important part of our academic plans and preparation for research, graduate school, and careers.
Being unable to enroll affects more than our schedules. Students plan their coursework around prerequisites, graduation timelines, and opportunities to apply what they learn. Some of us, myself included, are graduating this semester and will not have another chance to enroll before graduation. For us, postponing CS 182 means losing the opportunity to take it as undergraduates.
We ask the department to work with the CS 182 course staff to accommodate waitlisted students by increasing enrollment capacity, adding discussion sections, and providing the teaching support necessary to maintain course quality. Expanding access should come with adequate staffing so that both currently enrolled and newly admitted students receive the support they deserve. We also ask that concurrent enrollment students be included in any enrollment expansion and given the opportunity to take CS 182 this semester.
We recognize that classroom space, staffing, and funding create real constraints. We ask the department to make accommodating the CS 182 waitlist a priority and communicate clearly about potential expansion, enrollment decisions, and the timeline for resolving the waitlist. This would help students make informed decisions before falling behind or losing other course options.
Berkeley’s commitment to education should include helping its students access the courses central to their goals. Students eager to study machine learning should have a fair opportunity to build that foundation during their time here.
Please sign this petition to support expanding CS 182 enrollment and providing the resources needed to accommodate waitlisted students this semester.
