The Issue

I have lived in Yarm for over 30 years and regularly walk my dog on the High Street. Like many residents, I deeply value the unique visual beauty and historic charm of Yarm High Street. It is a place where history is felt in every cobblestone and where community thrives through small, local businesses that line the street. However, our beloved street now faces potential changes that could alter its character irreparably.

Stockton Borough Council has put forth plans to undertake significant works on Yarm High Street. While development can signal progress, these plans threaten to erode the historic essence of the area. Yarm High Street is renowned for its distinct character that sets it apart from commercial hubs like Teesside Park. The proposed changes, which promise modern amenities and features, could make Yarm High Street lose its individuality, turning it into a mere shadow of larger, impersonal retail complexes.

Moreover, the planned works could lead to the reduction of valuable parking spaces, further impacting the accessibility and viability of local businesses that rely on visitors from neighbouring towns.

I urge Stockton Borough Council to postpone these plans and engage in a comprehensive consultation process with residents and businesses. It is crucial to ensure that any proposed developments align with the preservation of our historic and cultural heritage, and reflect the community's needs and wishes.

By delaying the implementation of these works, the council would show its commitment to genuine community engagement and to safeguarding the historical legacy of Yarm High Street.

Please join me in asking Stockton Borough Council to listen to the voices of Yarm's residents and business owners. Sign this petition to stop this act of cultural vandalism and help protect the integrity of our cherished High Street.
