Request San Luis Obispo County Equitably Fund the Templeton Library

The Issue

As residents of Templeton, we have been without a community library for over four decades. In 1979, after Prop 13 was enacted, the former Templeton Library was shut down. To fill this void, we, Templeton Community Library Association (TCLA), came together and funded the construction of a new library which was completed in 2022. This charming modular building is presently operated by TCLA and a team of committed volunteers.

The new Templeton Library stands as a testament to our community, yet we receive no financial support from San Luis Obispo (SLO) County. The SLO County Library collects 1.6% of Templeton property taxes for library services, but none of these funds flow back to our community library. Instead, this money is diverted to the 14 other county branches.

The SLO County Library has a $15 million budget, and it seems only fair that a proportionate amount be allocated to support the Templeton Library which we labored to bring into existence. This is not just about money; it's about supporting an institution that encourages education, fosters community interaction, and helps Templeton thrive. Now is the time to rectify this financial exclusion.

Please join us in lauding the accomplishments of TCLA to ask that SLO County include Templeton Library in their budget, allowing us to continue providing invaluable services to the community. Our request is simple, but its impact will be immeasurable. Please sign this petition to bolster our plea to the powers that be.
