Request review of walk zone safety for Winchester Crossing
The Issue
As a parent in the Winchester Crossing community, my heart sinks at the thought of every morning my child making the trek of 2.4 miles to Banschbach Middle School. The path is fraught with danger, from speeding vehicles to lack of proper pedestrian walkways. This concern for my child's safety is shared by many parents in our community, who feel helpless as they send their children to school knowing the risks they face.
Currently, the walk zone designation for our area does not align with the realities on the ground. There are insufficient crosswalks, sidewalks, and crossing guards, making the journey to school hazardous for our children. According to the National Center for Safe Routes to School, proper infrastructure such as sidewalks and crosswalks can reduce pedestrian injuries by up to 88%. Yet, Princeton ISD's current policies do not ensure these critical safety measures are in place for our children.
Moreover, data from the Texas Department of Transportation highlights that areas lacking sufficient pedestrian safety measures have a higher incidence of accidents and injuries involving school children. These are not just numbers but potential life-threatening situations our children face daily.
We, the undersigned, urge the Princeton Independent School District Board of Trustees to undertake a comprehensive review of the student walk zone safety and transportation policies for students residing in Winchester Crossing. Our recommendations include:
1. Conducting an independent safety audit of the current walk zone to identify potential hazards and areas for improvement.
2. Providing transportation options such as school buses for students located in high-risk areas.
3. Implementing infrastructure improvements, including more crosswalks, sidewalks, and lighting in key walking routes.
4. Increasing the presence of crossing guards at crucial intersections during school start and end times.
Immediate action is essential to safeguard our children and provide peace of mind to parents and guardians in the Winchester Crossing community. By addressing these pressing issues, the Board will not only ensure the safety of our students but also demonstrate a commitment to the well-being of its community members.
Sign this petition to voice our collective concern for the safety of our children and to urge Princeton ISD to prioritize their safety through enhanced transportation policies and infrastructure improvements. Let us work together to protect our community's future.
