Request Norwich Township to review $29,000 development charge
The Issue
As a concerned member of the Norwich community, I am deeply troubled by the lack of transparency and accountability exhibited by our local government, particularly in the case of Hometown Beauty. This small business, set to improve and enrich our community, is now facing an undue financial burden stemming from a $29,000 development charge levied unexpectedly during renovations of the former Carnegie Library building.
The owner proactively reached out to Norwich Township staff on three separate occasions before purchasing the building. Her inquiries were aimed at understanding the requirements and conditions for her proposed business plans. Despite these efforts, she was not informed about any significant development charges. The sudden imposition of this $29,000 fee, after she had already invested in purchasing and renovating the premises, is both unfair and counterproductive to fostering a thriving local business environment.
Oxford County and Norwich Township's responsibility is to foster a business-friendly atmosphere that encourages entrepreneurs rather than stifles them. The imposition of this charge without prior disclosure reflects a troubling lack of communication and failure of duty towards community members striving to contribute positively to the local economy.
We, the supporters of this petition, urge the township and county officials to review and reassess this situation promptly. We demand transparency in communication and a fair evaluation of the circumstances leading to the development charge, considering the efforts made by the owner to comply with township regulations from the onset. Rectifying this oversight is crucial in demonstrating the township's commitment to supporting local businesses and ensuring the economic vitality of Norwich.
In signing this petition, we call upon Norwich Township and Oxford County to take corrective action in favor of Hometown Beauty, promoting an environment where small businesses can thrive without facing unexpected financial hurdles. Your support is vital to effect change and support our local entrepreneurs.
