There is a massive opportunity over the next three weeks to take a giant step closer to nature laws that actually work to protect nature and an independent umpire to make the system work for wildlife and forests.
But your help is needed, now, to make this opportunity a reality. Together, we can turn the volume up to 11 over the next three weeks so our pollies can’t help but hear your call for reform on nature laws.
SEND THE MESSAGE: IT'S TIME TO LEAD
Right now, short-term governments are too scared to stand up to the vested interests that profit from weak laws and a “somebody else’s problem” approach.
As part of Australia’s largest environmental alliance—Places You Love—the Wilderness Society has spent the last six years pushing all sides of politics to create an independent advocate for nature to ensure this country has environment laws that will actually protect wildlife and forests.
While the current Coalition Government has shown little interest to date, the Labor Opposition has recently added strong new nature laws and institutions to the final draft of its National Platform.1 The National Platform sets out Labor’s policy agenda going into the next federal election.
This is good news, but not everyone in Labor is over the line and vested interests from logging and mining industries will be working furiously behind the scenes over the next three weeks to stop effective action to protect our environment.
Will you ask the ALP Opposition Leader, Deputy Leader and Shadow Environment Minister to stand strong on new national nature laws and institutions?
EMAIL THE ALP LEADERSHIP NOW
Together, we need to lift the environment above politics and entrust decision-making to independent, science-based institutions—like a National Environment Commission—that can set strong national standards.
Governments don’t last forever. But we need our living world to.
It’s up to all of us to demonstrate to the ALP that this is what nature lovers like you and me across Australia want—an independent voice for nature and laws that protect the people, places and wildlife we love.
Yours for nature,
Suzanne
