Petition for School Bus Transportation for Summerwood Elementary Students
As parents and residents of the Summerwood community, we are requesting that Humble ISD review the need for bus transportation for students attending Summerwood Elementary School.

Our family has lived in Summerwood for the past 13 years. Our oldest daughter, who is now 8 years old, has been attending Centennial Elementary School, while our youngest daughter, who is 5 years old, attended Summerwood Elementary during the past school year. This year, we have decided to enroll both of our daughters at Summerwood Elementary School.

While our family has always lived in Summerwood, our children were previously zoned to Centennial Elementary and had access to bus transportation. With both children now attending Summerwood Elementary, we no longer have any transportation options available. Following the rezoning to Summerwood Elementary, our family and many others in the community have lost access to school bus transportation.

As a result, we have no choice but to drive our children to and from school every day. Walking is simply not a realistic or safe option for young elementary students. Under normal weather conditions, it takes an adult approximately 39 minutes to walk from our area of Summerwood to Summerwood Elementary School. An elementary aged child would understandably require even more time to complete the same journey.

Expecting a five year old child to walk such a distance each morning and afternoon is neither practical nor safe, particularly during extreme Texas heat, heavy rain, severe weather, or other challenging conditions. In addition to the length of the walk, families must consider traffic, road crossings, driver visibility, and the overall safety of young children traveling such distances on foot.

Currently, there is no bus transportation available for students living in our area who attend Summerwood Elementary School. This places a significant burden on working families who must adjust their schedules to accommodate daily drop offs and pickups. For many households, this creates unnecessary stress and logistical challenges that could be alleviated through transportation services.

We respectfully ask Humble ISD to conduct a transportation and safety assessment for the Summerwood area and evaluate the feasibility of providing bus service for elementary students. Such an assessment would help identify potential safety concerns and determine whether current walking routes are appropriate for young children.

Providing bus transportation would support student safety, improve access to education, and assist families in balancing school and work responsibilities. Most importantly, it would ensure that our youngest students have a safe and reliable way to travel to and from school each day.

This request is not about convenience. It is about safety, accessibility, and ensuring that all students have a reasonable and secure way to attend school. We believe every child deserves safe transportation to and from school, regardless of where they live within the community.

We urge Humble ISD to consider the needs of Summerwood families and explore solutions that prioritize the safety and well being of our children.
