The Issue

On 1 November 2022, the council of Haringey implemented road restrictions in my area, meant to prevent motor vehicles from using residential streets as through routes. While the intention—to decrease traffic congestion and protect residential areas from becoming thoroughfares—might seem well-meaning at first glance, the reality for many of us living within the community has been significantly troubling and disruptive.

For those of us residing within a one-mile radius of these restrictions, what was once a simple one-minute journey home now drags on for ten minutes or more. Each day, I am forced to bypass my own street, encircle the block, and linger in the increased traffic congestion that the restrictions have inadvertently exacerbated. My daily life, that of my neighbours and many others, has been turned upside down due to these recent changes, which have detrimentally impacted time management and increased frustration.

The council's intentions to reduce traffic and pollution are commendable, yet the implementation overlooks the adverse effects on residents. Lives and routines have been needlessly disrupted without considering feasible alternatives more accommodating to those living in the affected areas.

A practical solution would be to amend the road restrictions, allowing residents within a one-mile radius an exemption or alternative routes that return our lives to their normal speed. This is achieved by introducing free permits or local access differentials for our area, which limits through traffic without unduly penalising residents.

Statistics from reputable sources show that traffic congestion can increase vehicle emissions due to idling, undermining the environmental goals these restrictions aim to achieve. This creates additional emissions in areas meant to be protected, making the situation counterproductive.

Therefore, I urge Haringey Council and other London Councils nationally to restructure the road restrictions currently in place and explore more resident-friendly solutions that address the concerns and realities of those who call this area home.

By signing this petition, you're helping to voice the everyday challenges we face and urge the council to adopt a more compassionate, nuanced approach to traffic management.
