Important Update from NRE Team:

We initially aimed to include questions on nudism and naturism in the 2026 Census. However, after publishing the petition, we were informed that it was too late to make this change. While we were able to edit the content of the petition, we could not update the link because it already had signatures. Instead of asking everyone to sign a new petition, we've decided to continue with the existing 2026 link. We hope this doesn’t cause any confusion, and we greatly appreciate your support as we move forward with this important cause.

Thank you for understanding!

Subject: Request for the inclusion of questions on nudism and naturism in the 2031 Australian Census.

We, the undersigned, respectfully request that the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) include specific questions about naturism and nudism in the upcoming 2031 Australian Census.

Background and Rationale:
Naturism is a growing lifestyle in Australia, with an estimated 200,000 to 513,000 Australians actively participating in naturism. This represents approximately 1.9% of the population. Additionally, a significant portion of Australians—around 3.4 million (approximately 12.75%)—occasionally engage in naturist activities, such as visiting clothing-optional beaches or participating in naturist events.

These numbers, combined with evidence from global trends, surveys, and the growing number of naturist-friendly spaces across the country, make it clear that naturism is an important and legitimate part of Australian society. However, this community remains largely underrepresented in official government data.

Including questions on naturism in the 2031 Census will help:

Acknowledge and validate the naturist community, ensuring it is recognized as part of the cultural fabric of Australia.
Support public health policies by providing data on the mental and physical well-being benefits that naturism can offer, including reduced stress and improved body image.
Promote inclusivity by ensuring that all lifestyle choices, including naturism, are fairly represented.
Foster tourism and economic opportunities, as naturism-related tourism is a significant contributor to the economy, with Australians regularly participating in naturist events and visiting naturist-friendly spaces.
Proposed Census Questions:

Naturism Participation
"Do you engage in naturism (the practice of social nudity in designated areas or private spaces)?"

Yes
No
Prefer not to answer
Naturist Community Membership
"Are you a member of any naturist organizations or clubs?"

"Do you believe that engaging in naturism contributes positively to your physical or mental well-being?"

Geographic Participation
"In which state or territory do you most commonly engage in naturist activities?"

[Dropdown list of states and territories]
Why These Questions Matter:

Recognition: Just as questions about sexual orientation and gender identity were added to previous censuses to support the rights of these communities, questions about naturism would acknowledge the rights and participation of naturists in Australia.
Public Health: Evidence suggests naturism has a positive impact on mental health, body image, and physical well-being. The inclusion of this data can guide better health and wellness policies.
Economic Impact: Understanding the size and scope of the naturist community will help identify opportunities to boost tourism and promote naturism-related businesses.
Inclusivity: Reflecting naturism in the census is part of a broader commitment to inclusivity and equality, ensuring that all lifestyles are recognized and respected.
Action Request:
We respectfully request that the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) take these proposed questions into consideration and include them in the 2031 Census. Your support will provide valuable insights into the naturist community and help create more informed policies for all Australians.

SIGN THE PETITION TODAY and help us make naturism a recognized part of Australia’s diverse and inclusive society.
