Request for temporary pause in approving new developments in Brunswick County, NC

Request for temporary pause in approving new developments in Brunswick County, NC
The Issue
As of January 2026, the NC Department of Environmental Quality (NCDEQ) has halted approvals of any new sewer line extensions in Brunswick County, NC. This decision comes after nine distressing instances since March of 2025 where untreated wastewater has unfortunately been discharged into our local rivers, swamps, and streams due to sewage spills. These spills have led to a staggering 172,183 gallons of untreated water being dumped into unapproved areas, posing a grave risk to our environment and public health.
We, the residents of Brunswick County, are genuinely concerned about the well-being of our community and natural surroundings. The continuous development without addressing the existing wastewater management issues further exacerbates these problems. Our rivers and streams, which are vital to our local ecosystem and economy, are being severely compromised.
To address this urgent matter, we are requesting a temporary pause on approving any new residential, commercial, or industrial developments in Brunswick County until we can ensure our wastewater infrastructure can support them. This pause will provide the necessary time to reevaluate and upgrade our current systems to prevent further environmental disasters. Investing in improved infrastructure will not only protect our precious natural resources but will also ensure sustainable growth for our community.
This petition seeks to hold local authorities accountable and urge them to act before more irreparable damages occur. Let us demand immediate action to secure the future health, safety, and prosperity of Brunswick County. Please stand with us by signing this petition and making your voice heard to ensure our environment remains protected for generations to come.
