The Honourable Taoiseach Simon Harris, Minister of Foreign Affairs Micheál Martin, Director Latin America Unit Luke Feeney

Dear Taoiseach Simon Harris, Minister Micheál Martin and Director Latin America Unit Luke Feeney

We are writing to you as members of the Irish Venezuelan Community to express our deep concern about the recently held election in Venezuela on July 28th, which was marred by irregularities and a complete lack of transparency. In addition, there have been widespread reports of fraud and voter intimidation that totally undermine the basic principles of democracy and credibility, principles desperately needed to maintain a climate of peace and reconciliation among Venezuelans.

Knowing the absolute commitment of the Irish people to preserving democracy, to protecting human rights, to maintaining a system of free and fair elections, and given the large number of Venezuelan nationals living in this country, some of whom already hold Irish citizenship, we call on the Irish government to take a stand against the repression of the aforementioned principles.

In light of these concerns, we kindly urge you to consider issuing a public statement condemning the reported irregularities in the Venezuelan election, encouraging the Venezuelan government to conduct an exhaustive and transparent review of the electoral results and processes. The democratic will of the Venezuelan people should be thoroughly respected and it is morally incumbent upon the Venezuelan authorities to ensure that the principles of democracy are adhered to.

As a country that has been a very welcoming home of opportunity for Venezuelans and other nationalities seeking a better future, we believe in your fairness, objectivity, and impartiality to help us in this dark time. We are counting on your support and solidarity to fulfill our democratic obligations and to honour those values which Ireland has eagerly embraced since time immemorial.

Thank you for all your support and for taking the time to consider this urgent matter.

We look forward to a positive response and we expect Ireland to take a firm stance in upholding democracy and human rights in Venezuela.

Most respectfully,

Venezuelans living in Ireland
