Request for Removal - Dangerous Encampments in Richard Pierpoint Park
The Issue
On the scorching dry day of August 12, 2025, a fire broke out on the West side of 7 Gale Cres, the condo that overlooks the Centennial Gardens Disc Golf Course in Richard Pierpoint Park, St. Catharines, ON.
While I was trying to take advantage of a power outage at 7 Gale Cres to water our garden, an unforeseen and terrifying event unfolded. A massive, uncontrollable brush and garbage fire erupted, fueled by a discarded stroller, tent, mattress, and hundreds of pounds of garbage. Despite our frantic efforts to control it, the fire grew rapidly out of control.
In the midst of our desperate attempts to douse the flames, propane tanks, concealed amidst the debris, began to explode one by one, endangering those who joined in the efforts to douse the fire while we waited for emergency services. This was the second fire that we had in the same location this summer.
The individuals responsible for the fire returned in the early hours of Aug 13, cut a hole in fence and stole a homeowners patio furniture. The homeless population has continually trespassed into 7 Gale Cres, even trying to break into our condo.
The growing homeless encampment at Richard Pierpoint Park and its surrounding area has not only become an eyesore but also poses significant safety risks to the local community. The accumulation of waste and hazardous materials has turned into a potential disaster waiting to happen, as seen with the recent fire outbreak.
This plea is not against individuals who find themselves in unfortunate circumstances but rather it seeks to address the safety concerns that are evidently impacting our community. St. Catharines' residents deserved to feel safe in their homes and surroundings. We urge the local authorities to take immediate action to provide alternative housing solutions for the homeless population and evict encampments from this public space. By doing so, we can work towards creating a safer, cleaner environment for everyone.
Sign this petition to call on local government and community leaders to prioritize safety and address the dangers posed by the current situation in Richard Pierpoint Park. It is crucial that we find sustainable solutions that consider both the welfare of the homeless and the safety of the wider community. Your support can ignite positive change and prevent future disasters.
