Request for Footbridge Replacement – Pine Avenue Bridge

Request for Footbridge Replacement – Pine Avenue Bridge
The Issue
Dear Mayor and Council,
I am writing to express my deep concern regarding the closure of the Pine Avenue Bridge. This structure has long served as a vital connection within our community, linking residential areas to important recreational spaces such as the disc golf course, parks, and the hockey bunks. It has also been a key route for local schools, which use it regularly for track and fitness activities.
The closure of the bridge represents a significant loss for our community—particularly for seniors, families with children, and daily walkers who rely on this route as part of their fitness routines. It once formed an essential link in our walking path network, promoting healthy lifestyles and easy access to public green spaces.
While I understand the costs involved in replacing a vehicle-rated bridge, I would like to propose the implementation of a footbridge in its place. A pedestrian bridge would be a cost-effective solution that supports recreational use without the high expense of vehicle infrastructure.
Furthermore, despite barriers installed to prevent access, I have witnessed daily that pedestrians continue to hop over them to reach the disc golf course and trails—underscoring the bridge's importance and the community’s continued need for it. This raises serious safety concerns that should not be ignored.
We kindly ask that the community be provided with a quote for a pedestrian walking bridge, so we can better understand the potential costs and explore possible avenues for support and funding.
I urge you to consider rebuilding this structure as a footpath bridge for the safety and well-being of all residents who use and benefit from this essential community connection. Its absence is deeply felt, and its restoration would bring significant value back to our neighborhood.
Thank you for your time and attention to this matter.
