The Issue

Growing up in florida, like many teenagers, I cherish the freedom to hang out with my friends, especially as I approach my senior year of high school. This special time in our lives is meant for creating memories, bonding, and experiencing the joys of youth to their fullest. However, the current 10 PM curfew on Fridays prevents us from truly enjoying these moments, often cutting our evenings short just as they begin to get exciting.

Many of us believe that extending the Friday curfew by two hours, until midnight, would allow teens like myself to safely enjoy our time together without feeling rushed, while still respecting the rules set for our safety. Research shows that teenagers who build strong social networks in high school tend to perform better academically, showcasing the importance of spending time with friends recreationally.

Additionally, extending curfew on Fridays would not only accommodate social activities but also school events such as football games, plays, and late-night study sessions, many of which often run later than 10 PM. Communities that have made curfew adjustments report improvements in student happiness, as well as a decrease in stress-related issues among teens.

We understand that concerns about safety and noise pollution exist, but by working in partnership with local law enforcement and community boards, it is possible to find a balanced solution. For example, extra patrols in popular hangout areas can ensure safety, while encouraging responsible behavior among teenagers.

We kindly ask for your support to advocate for our proposal of extending the Friday curfew to 12 AM, allowing us to enjoy these formative high school years more fully. Please sign this petition to show your support for giving teenagers a bit more freedom to savor one of the most precious times of our lives.

Responded
“Hello! Thanks for raising this issue up. I appreciate the engagement in our Town. I did want to clarify a point regarding the ordinance, however. The Town does not have a 10:00 p.m. curfew on Fridays. Chapter 133 of the Fletcher Code of Ordinances states that for juveniles under the age of 16 the curfew begins at 12:01 a.m. on Friday and Saturday nights and ends at 6:00 a.m. Additionally, the ordinance provides several exceptions including religious, traveling to and from school, adult supervised activities, employment, and other circumstances. Essentially, the midnight Friday curfew already exists on Friday age Saturday. Additionally it only applies to those under 16 years old. I do appreciate young folk being engaged in our Town! Please continue to participate and organize. Preston Blakely, Mayor Town of Fletcher”
