The Issue

On January 8, 2026, a tragic event unfolded in New Palestine at the intersection of W 600 S and S 150 W. My father was struck by a vehicle while jogging, a collision that nearly claimed his life. The road, with a speed limit of 50 mph, is notoriously dangerous, and the incident has left a lasting impact on our family. My father has since undergone multiple surgeries, with another one occurring today, a testament to the prolonged suffering and challenges stemming from the accident.

The severity of the incident highlights a pressing need for action to prevent similar occurrences in the future. This intersection is a hazard not only to pedestrians but also to drivers, who are put at risk by the lack of adequate traffic controls.

In light of these events, I am urging local authorities to conduct a thorough traffic safety study at this intersection, aimed at evaluating and addressing potential risks. Specifically, the installation of a 4-way stop should be considered to enhance the safety and well-being of everyone using this route.

Statistics show that implementing a 4-way stop can reduce the likelihood of accidents at dangerous intersections. According to a study published by the Institute of Transportation Engineers, adding a stop sign can decrease injury-causing crashes by approximately 50%. These figures underscore the potential life-saving benefits of such an intervention.

Furthermore, community feedback has indicated ongoing concerns about the speed and frequency of vehicles travelling through this intersection, reinforcing the need for immediate action.

I urge you to sign this petition to safeguard our community and prevent further tragedies. By doing so, we can collectively call upon New Palestine's local government to prioritize the safety of its residents and visitors alike. Your support is invaluable in making this necessary change a reality. Please join me in advocating for a safer New Palestine.
