'King Charles, a long-time friend of the red squirrels, was instrumental in forming the U.K. Squirrel Accord, which manages the negative impacts of invasive grey squirrels, who outnumber red squirrels 25 to 1.
Sarah Beatham and her team from the U.K. Animal Plant Health Agency are attempting to control, using hazelnut butter and a contraceptive gel, the grey squirrel population. so red squirrels can recover. The mixture was successfully tested in traps whose doors are too heavy for the smaller red squirrels, but large enough for the grey squirrels to enter. The contraceptive gel can be delivered to large wildlife populations with little human involvement.'
Hopefully, similar nonsurgical contraceptive methods will be available to our stray pets one day.
