Request city of Margate to allow residents to vote on the development agreement
The Issue
The residents and stakeholders of the City of Margate are raising their voices against the current Development Agreement and Option to Ground Lease with Brookfield DA Holdings LLC for the Margate City Center project. We believe the community's needs and visions have been overlooked, and it is time for the Margate Community Redevelopment Agency and City Commission to allow the residents to vote on the residential apartments.
The Margate City Center project is meant to be a vibrant and inclusive hub for the community, a place where families, friends, and visitors can enjoy a variety of amenities, public spaces, and cultural events. However, the inclusion of residential apartments does not align with this vision. Residential developments can lead to increased traffic congestion, strain on local infrastructure, and detract resources from communal areas that should be at the heart of a city center.
Margate's residents are deeply invested in creating a public space that fosters community unity and economic growth. A city center without residential apartments allows for the inclusion of pedestrian-friendly walkways, parks, cultural venues, and retail spaces that are accessible and enjoyable for everyone. The focus should be on developing a center that provides substantial opportunities for local businesses, cultural endeavors, and community gatherings.
The current approach may also lead to unforeseen challenges related to housing density, noise pollution, and population growth that could dilute the community's unique character. We aim to prioritize projects that maintain Margate’s identity and enhance the overall quality of life for its residents.
Therefore, we urge the City of Margate Community Redevelopment Agency to revisit this agreement and explore alternatives that prioritize a true community-centric space. Now is the time to shape a city center that genuinely reflects the ideals and desires of the Margate community.
