KEEP BUSSELTON RATE RISES FAIR AND AFFORDABLE

As ratepayers in the City of Busselton, we are deeply concerned about the proposed rate increase for the 2026/2027 financial year. If the proposed increase proceeds, standard residential rates will have risen by approximately 20% over the past three years, almost double the rate of inflation over the same period.

At a time when our community is facing an ongoing cost of living crisis, many families, pensioners and small businesses are already struggling, and every dollar counts. Another above inflation rate increase will place further pressure on households already making difficult decisions about how to balance their budgets. Local government should recognise these realities and ensure its financial decisions reflect the circumstances facing the community it serves.

We are calling on the City of Busselton to limit this year's rate increase to no more than the current Consumer Price Index (CPI). This represents a fair and responsible approach that allows Council to maintain essential services while recognising the financial pressures being experienced by ratepayers.

We believe there is a better way forward. Rather than relying on repeat above inflation rate increases, Council should undertake a comprehensive review of its planned expenditure, prioritising essential services and critical infrastructure while identifying opportunities to reduce or defer non-essential spending. Just as families across Busselton are tightening their household budgets, Council should demonstrate the same level of financial discipline.

The City of Busselton is not alone in facing increasing costs. Local governments across Western Australia are also dealing with inflationary pressures, rising construction costs and growing demand for services. Many councils have responded by reviewing expenditure, reducing discretionary spending, improving efficiencies and keeping rate increases to a minimum. We believe the City of Busselton should demonstrate the same commitment to responsible financial management before asking residents to shoulder further financial pressure.

We are also concerned that the City has not adequately considered the community when scheduling the Special Council Meeting on this matter, for 4:00 pm on a weekday, making it difficult for many working residents to attend. For ratepayers travelling from communities such as Yallingup, Eagle Bay and other outlying areas, the travel time further limits their ability to participate and share their concerns.

• Limit the 2026/27 rate increase to no more than CPI.
• Review planned expenditure to identify savings before increasing rates.
• Demonstrate responsible financial management that reflects the cost of living pressures facing Busselton families and businesses.

Together, we can send a clear message that responsible budgeting should start with Council, not the wallets of struggling ratepayers. Before asking families and businesses to pay more, every reasonable effort should be made to reduce unnecessary expenditure and deliver value for the community.
