Petition updateRequest BBC use the correct term Refugee Crisis instead of Migrant CrisisAnd the debate goes on

The online debate continues, with writers and journalists seemingly having a great time deconstructing the semantics of words such as migrant, refugee and asylum seeker.
A particular trend is the focus on legal definitions with phrases such as "one is an asylum seeker until recognised as a refugee" and therefore falling back on the word migrant because it is, in this context, the more neutral term. This may well be technically correct, but by doing this they are ignoring the negative connotations words such as these have acquired in modern day usage.
So it seems writers and journalists have a dilemma – do they stick to the legal definitions? If it’s really such a hard one to call, why not avoid the dilemma altogether and use a different term? Humanitarian Crisis is one that has been suggested many times in this petition.
As I have indicated a number of times already the purpose of this petition is not just about the phrases Migrant Crisis or Refugee Crisis: it is about not presenting those involved in an unfairly negative light and giving back a little dignity and respect. There are alternatives, so it comes as a surprise that there should be any debate at all.
