The Issue

Despite taking diligent measures to save energy, such as turning down my thermostat, installing a screen door, my landlord installing a new heat pump, and being careful not to use more than one large appliance at a time, my energy bills have inexplicably increased. Alarmingly, during months when I was out of town and not using my appliances, the bills skyrocketed beyond the percentage increases Duke Energy claimed. I am not alone in facing this dilemma.

Many residents of North Carolina have been struggling with disproportionately high utility bills, despite adhering to energy-saving practices. This troubling pattern raises concerns about the transparency and fairness of Duke Energy’s billing practices. An audit by the North Carolina State Attorney General will help clarify if their billing is conducted appropriately and fairly.

The increased financial burden on residents contradicts efforts by the consumers to limit energy use, impacting budgets and quality of life. While companies have operational costs, customers deserve transparency and fairness in billing processes.

North Carolinians are asking for an unbiased, transparent audit of Duke Energy’s profits and billing practices to assure the public that there is no exploitation. Further, we encourage investigative journalists to look into Duke Energy’s billing practices to ensure public awareness and accountability.

We deserve fair treatment and transparent billing processes that reflect actual usage and agreed-upon rates. This petition is a critical step toward remedying financial burdens unnecessarily placed on consumers by unwarranted charges.

Sign this petition to demand an audit by the North Carolina State Attorney General to ensure Duke Energy’s billing practices are investigated thoroughly and fairly. Your signature can bring the needed transparency and fairness in energy billing in our state.
