The Issue

Having lived in Alton for 33 years and as a local business owner, I regularly hear from frustrated residents who feel they have no say in the selection of their home service trash providers. The issuing of a new contract for waste management is generating concerns among our community members. Many residents, bound by contracts they did not choose and have no say in, aspire to have the freedom to choose their preferred trash service provider.

The residents of Alton deserve to have a say in the decision-making processes that affect their daily lives and finances. A publicly held hearing would allow residents the opportunity to voice their opinions and concerns regarding the upcoming trash contract. By doing so, the Alton City Council can make a decision that truly reflects the will and best interests of its residents.

The issue of freedom of choice in trash services is not unique to Alton. Across various municipalities, residents are expressing similar frustrations about being locked into contracts with no say, leading to dissatisfaction and a desire for change. Transparent, open, and democratic discussions with the city council are crucial to addressing these grievances and ensuring community satisfaction.

A public hearing will serve as a platform where we can assess residents' preferences and concerns, gathering valuable feedback before finalizing the trash contract. Allowing such participation will ensure that the final decision is well-informed and reflects the desire for a competitive and fair-choice market.

Join us in asking the Alton City Council to hold a public hearing, giving residents the chance to contribute their thoughts, make their concerns heard, and participate in shaping the future of our community's waste management decisions. Sign this petition to advocate for transparency, choice, and the democratic involvement of Alton's residents in local issues that impact us all.
