The Issue
I've lived on the East Fork White River my entire life, running its waters and casting a line into its depths. It’s not just a river to me—it’s a way of life. For years, I, along with many other residents of Bedford, Indiana, have enjoyed everything the river has to offer. It’s where the Bedford Boat Club holds catfishing and bass tournaments, a place for fishing, recreation, and community gathering. However, our ability to navigate and enjoy this treasured natural resource is being compromised by a significant log blockage at the railroad trusses just upstream from the 37 Bridge.
The log jam has been a persistent issue, particularly jamming up the whole right side of the trusses when traveling downstream. Over the years, it has grown worse, severely limiting accessible navigation up the river. If left unaddressed, the situation is likely to deteriorate even further in the next year or two, potentially obliterating any meaningful navigation north of the trusses.
This is not just a minor inconvenience—it impacts our local recreation, environment, and safety. Imagine the risk to navigation and the lost opportunities for community events and local sports tournaments. The degradation of our river not only affects personal leisure but also impairs local ecological balance, as the blocked water flow could affect fish and other wildlife habitats.
We call upon the Indiana Department of Natural Resources (DNR) and Lawrence County officials to take immediate, effective action. This could involve clearing the existing log jam, establishing a regular maintenance program to manage future blockages, and implementing safeguards to prevent recurrence.
