The Issue
As a student at South Carolina State University, a proud Historically Black College and University (HBCU), I am deeply concerned about the decision to have Pamela Evette as the commencement speaker for the Spring 2026 graduation ceremony. This choice feels like a disservice to the values and mission that our institution stands for.
South Carolina State University has a rich legacy of empowering students and fostering leaders who are committed to diverse, inclusive, and progressive values. Throughout our history, we have been at the forefront of advocating for social justice, equality, and education that truly represents and supports our community. Inviting a speaker whose actions and policies do not resonate with the ethos of our university undermines this legacy.
Pamela Evette's political positions and affiliations have raised significant controversy in South Carolina, especially among communities who feel marginalized by current state policies. Many students, families, and alumni are concerned that her presence at one of our most significant events does not reflect the values we collectively hold dear.
Our graduation ceremony should celebrate the culmination of our academic achievements and honor the journey of resilience and empowerment we have undertaken. It is a moment that should inspire and uplift our graduates, preparing them to tackle the challenges and opportunities ahead. We deserve a speaker whose message aligns with hope, empowerment, and progress—a speaker who truly embodies the spirit of South Carolina State University.
We respectfully request the administration to reconsider this decision and select a commencement speaker who reflects the aspirations and values of our students. An alternative speaker who inspires and resonates with our diverse and dynamic university community would contribute to a memorable and fitting celebration of our achievements.
By signing this petition, we call on the administration of South Carolina State University to act in the best interest of its students, honoring the rich culture and history of our revered institution. Let us ensure that our commencement ceremony reflects the legacy and future we are proud to be part of. Please join us in advocating for a commencement speaker who truly honors our community and aspirations. Sign the petition today to make your voice heard!
