Request a fair review of IA-level Maths exams by Pearson Edexcel
The Issue
I'm a student who recently sat the A-level Maths exams with Pearson Edexcel here in the Middle East, and I'm reaching out to fellow students, parents, and educators to voice a significant concern – the exam difficulty. Many of us who poured countless hours into studying found ourselves overwhelmed by the complexity of this year's questions, as did students in many surrounding countries such as the United Arab Emirates and Bahrain. They wouldn't take exams and would gain A-star and A grades without taking the same exams that we took, and they will take repeated exams from past years.
The A-level Maths exams are designed to assess our understanding and ability to apply mathematical concepts at an advanced level. However, the feedback from numerous students across the region, including myself, has been that this year's examination was disproportionately challenging compared to previous years. This is not just a personal gripe; rather, it's a widespread issue that has caused undue stress and concern among students aspiring to achieve the grades necessary for their future endeavors.
Reports from other regions and from educational experts indicate that the exam content went beyond the standard curriculum that was covered in our lessons. We feel that this deviation from the expected format and difficulty level is unfair and could have repercussions on our academic futures. Students who have consistently excelled in their coursework were faced with questions that did not align with the materials and practice we had been diligently prepared with.
This situation calls for immediate attention from Pearson Edexcel and a thorough evaluation of the examinations in question. We strongly urge the examination board to conduct a comprehensive review of the A-level Maths exam papers and assess the fairness of the grading system implemented. Adjustments should be made where necessary to reflect the integrity and standard of fairness that is expected from such a prestigious examination board.
Furthermore, additional support measures for students affected by these exams should be considered. This might include supplementary exam sittings or a review of grading thresholds to ensure that students' hard work and dedication are not jeopardized by an inordinately difficult exam paper.
We are not seeking preferential treatment but fairness in assessment. By addressing this issue, Pearson Edexcel can maintain the academic integrity and trust that students and educators place in their examinations. Please join us in calling for a fair review of the A-level Maths exams by signing this petition. Let's ensure that future exams reflect the curriculum and the capabilities of the hardworking students they are meant to assess.
This is NOT a petition for higher marks. This is NOT a petition of complaints. This is NOT an overreaction we are only demanding fairness.
This is about how the average student is so incredibly disadvantaged disproportionately. Maths has become a race for time. NOT academic ability.
