Republic of Ireland: Recognize the Armenian Genocide!

Republic of Ireland: Recognize the Armenian Genocide!
The Issue
Dear Leo Varadkar,
We, the undersigned, respectfully submit this petition to urge the Irish Government to officially recognize the Armenian Genocide. The Armenian Genocide stands as one of the darkest chapters in human history, where approximately 1.5 million Armenians were systematically killed and millions more were displaced from their ancestral lands by the Ottoman Empire during World War I.
Despite overwhelming evidence from historians, scholars, and survivors, the Armenian Genocide remains unrecognized by many governments around the world. The failure to recognize this atrocity not only dishonors the memory of the victims but also undermines efforts to prevent future genocides and promote human rights worldwide.
Recognizing the Armenian Genocide is not only a moral imperative but also a crucial step towards justice, reconciliation, and healing for the Armenian people and all those affected by genocide. By officially acknowledging this historical truth, the Irish Government will send a powerful message of solidarity with the Armenian community and reaffirm its commitment to upholding human rights and preventing genocide.
Moreover, recognizing the Armenian Genocide aligns with Ireland's proud tradition of standing up against injustice and oppression. As a nation that has experienced its own struggles for independence and justice, Ireland has a unique opportunity to lead by example and join the growing number of countries that have formally recognized the Armenian Genocide.
Therefore, we call on the Irish Government to:
- Officially recognize the Armenian Genocide perpetrated by the Ottoman Empire during World War I.
- Commemorate the victims of the Armenian Genocide and honor their memory through recognising genocide remembrance day, April 24th.
- Support efforts to promote awareness, recognition, and condemnation of genocide in all its forms, both past and present.
