Dear donors, friends and supporters

Many but maybe not all of you are aware that major oil companies, namely GALP, ENI, AUSTRALIS,  are preparing for oil exploitation with drilling and fracking in Portugal’s south and middle regions.

As this could have disastrous ecological consequences ASMAA is challenging the project and has taken the case to the courts. This legal battle goes hand in hand with an information war, known today as fake news.

In this info-war, the tactics of the oil boys have been to announce a withdrawal from their drilling and fracking plans and in so doing, make people believe the campaigns to save Portugal’s environment have been successful, so they can shift their attention to other matters. Then they sneak in some new contract or concession hoping we will not notice. It is also a way to discredit ASMAA when it goes cap in hand asking for more help. Indeed, people may think ASMAA still collect funds for a case which has been closed while the opposite is true and the threat is looming as dangerously as ever.

We cannot afford to take our eyes off the situation.

ASMAA’s team is constantly researching and checking the facts, but this ongoing game of cat and mouse is at times demoralising. ASMAA will not stop the fight it has been fighting day after day, month after month, year after year and on a shoestring. We now need some encouragement.

Currently it looks as if only ASMAA’s legal battle stands between drilling or no drilling in the Aljezur deep sea area.

In less than 2 weeks we will be having our first day in court and this means that our costs are escalating daily …

Here's our current situation ...

So far we’ve settled the more urgent bills, but the costs of our legal team for January will come up soon and the days in court on 11th February and the days of preparation for it, will be considerable.

By Monday the 4th February we need at least another 5,000€ … and we need to count on you to help in raising this amount. And NO, we don’t like asking and having to keep on asking for funds to cover the costs of anti-oil campaigns. As we’ve said often, we are not fundraisers … all we want, just like you, is to ensure that our way of life, our environment, the future of our children and grandchildren is protected from the greed of corporate and political leaders.

ASMAA’s team is working hard and does not mind doing so. After all many of us own a lovely refuge under the Portuguese sun, and we are not waiting for an oil rig to be installed in our backyard or for an oil spill to ruin our beaches or pristine country side for years to come. Such an accident will also destroy the market value of our houses should we wish to leave a country destroyed by the greed of some.

To read the latest developments just scrawl down this page, but before that, please take 5 minutes and make a donation to help finance our anti-oil drilling/anti-fracking battle to protect OUR rights in this beautiful country that is Portugal.

DONATE NOW 25€, 50€, 100€ or whatever amount you want to donate. We will be grateful.
