A common breastfeeding misconception:
"Mom can just pump so dad can take the baby."
Many mothers, myself included, struggle to pump an adequate amount of expressed milk that allows lengthy separations of mother and child.
It's FALSE to equate milk supply with pumping success. If I was unable to produce enough milk, my exclusively breastfed baby would have not survived to month 6 on that amount of milk. He's not wasted away yet. Have you seen his chubby little cheeks? (That's Lorenzo on the cover photo for the petition).
With breastfeeding, output equals input. If he's producing enough wet diapers throughout the day, then he's getting enough breastmilk during nursing sessions.
I pump until I'm sore and then I pump some more, desperately trying to preserve my milk supply - as well as trying to get him enough milk for while he's away from me.
However, the family courts are allowed to rule against a pediatrician's recommendation of mom putting baby directly to breast for timed nursing breaks during the father's parenting time - even though that's directly what's in the best interest of the child. If you have a father who's unwilling to co-parent, then the child suffers.
This is why my petition is paramount to preserving breastfeeding rights in the family court setting. Facts and opinions are NOT interchangeable! Family court judges do NOT have the correct information on breastfeeding basics! Time for a change.
